The SEG

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the science of geophysics and the education of applied geophysicists. SEG, founded in 1930, fosters the expert and ethical practice of geophysics in the exploration and development of natural resources, in characterizing the near surface, and in mitigating earth hazards. The Society, which has more than 25,000 members in 129 countries, fulfills its mission through its publications, conferences, forums, Web sites, and educational opportunities.

SEG encourages its members to learn about the newest technologies by sponsoring speakers, publishing new theories in periodicals and other formats, and organizing continuing education classes around the world. Through SEG, members can network and learn from other professionals. http://seg.org

The SEG Executive Committee passed the following resolution:

"SEG, noting the approach of the 50-year anniversary in 2007 of the International Geophysical Year (IGY), which was outstandingly successful in advancing our knowledge of the Earth and geospace through the provision of comprehensive geoscientific observational data, noting the vast increase in observational data since the IGY, much of them available in near real-time, and the limitations on progress posed by the ever-growing problems of data storage, maintenance, and access, noting the unprecedented potential of modern information management methodologies, based on the internet, to overcome these limitations through sharing of information, software, and hardware, and supports the adoption of 2007 as the  Electronic Geophysical Year (eGY) - to be used as a focus for providing ready access to geoscientific data and processing capability using the electronic means now at our disposal."

SEG created an executive ad hoc committee: http://seg.org/publications/yearbook/getCommittees.cfm?name=EGY

The purpose of the ad hoc committee is to recommend to the SEG Executive Committee (EXCOM) the role that the SEG should play and how to participate in activities related to the 2007 - 2008 eGY and what activities to plan to honor the 50th anniversary of the IGY. The committee may plan IGY-2 activities independent of those planned by eGY, IPY, IYPE and IHY. The committee contemplates these  SEG funded activities to be identified as eGY 2007 -2008 recognized initiatives:

The president of the SEG shall request that the Society of Exploration Geophysicists be added as a sponsor of the existing IGY Gold Program. (request to be made to Dr. B. Thompson, IHY) http://ihy.gsfc.nasa.gov/igy_gold_reg.shtml

The participation of SEG members during the highly successful IGY 1957 - 1958 shall be documented in SEG's current publications. Some historical data is published. Other interesting notes have been obtained in file achieves of significant older SEG members.

Please submit papers: It is planned that the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 International Annual Meetings of the SEG shall include a session dedicated to eGY and IGY-2 related contributions. Some member affiliates of the SEG have indicated that they plan to dedicate regional annual meetings during 2007 and 2008 to the eGY and the IGY-2. http://abstracts.seg.org/abKit/SEG2006CallforPapers.pdf

Funds for eGY and IGY-2 activities are available by application to the SEG Foundation. A special project shall be created for expedited approval of eGy and IGY-2 funding needs. All requests should fit the criteria of the SEG Foundation.

On October 4, 2007, SEG shall join NASA and representatives of other countries in the 50th anniversary celebration of the successful launch on October 4, 1957 of the Russian artificial satellite Sputnik.
